ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIAL PROJECT – volunteers will join the staff of Strauss and local volunteers in activities to promote environmental policies affecting the green area called „Villa Aldiso – ArciPark“ (of ​​about 2000 square meters) entrusted to Strauss by the Municipality of Mussomeli. Volunteers will be involved in the activities such as:

• Care and beautification of the area;
• Recycling workshops;
• Gardening contest and flower arrangements;
• Graffiti workshops ;
• Awareness-raising activities and promotion of „environmental days.“

Moreover, it is given that with the full support of the city administration, the Strauss is transforming parts of the area in a Social Garden, volunteers will work in practice management of the entire complex, including the organic cultivation of native non-commercial varieties and free distribution of the products.

Journalism and Media – the project involves the active and participated support by volunteers in various areas related to the topic:

• Creation, layout, printing and distribution of „L’ALTERnativo“; Periodical of local information and social protest; historic brand of Strauss;
• Investigative reporting and writing articles on “ L’ALTERnativo“;
• Journalism workshops conducted with the support of professionals;
• Preparation and management of the newsletter, the website and the Facebook page;
• Care of the „section of the EVS volunteer“, on online local newspapers as „castelloincantato.it and magaze.it„;
• Photo editing and Video Making laboratories;
• Weekly tours of photography; photo exhibitions.

 Culture and information – part of the project, implemented directly in the secondary schools of the City of Mussomeli, where Strauss manages autonomous spaces and realizes communication products for disclosure, foresees the collaboration of volunteers who, with conversations and historical-didactic paths, will support teachers implementing language, culture and traditions workshops. It is active for 3 years now.

The project also includes the full involvement of two volunteers in the organization and implementation of „Inglish conversation clubs“, implemented laboratory classes of Strauss and addressed to young people and the local community.

Finally, volunteers will collaborate to Strauss in the organization and implementation of meetings and events, including the promotion of the program ERASMUS+ and projects of the same Strauss.

Volunteer profile – The profile of the volunteer must have the following characteristics:

• Keen interest in the contents of the project;
• Real motivation for the experience;
• Willingness to live and work in a multicultural environment;
• Will to strengthen his/her abilities to move towards future opportunities;
• Sense of responsibility towards people and things and respect for the work of others.

Will not be necessary qualifications, particular titles or experiences. In selecting candidates, it will also be observed gender balance.

Financial aspects:

• Pocket money: 115 Euros per month given at the beginning of each month;
• Pocket food: 135 Euros per month given at the beginning of each month;
• Travel tickets reimbursed till 100% according to the Erasmus+ distance calculator.

ACCOMODATION:
Volunteer will be housed in the apartment upper the association’s office, of which Strauss is owner, thanks to an agreement with the Municipality of Mussomeli. The structure is part of the Palazzo Spinnato. Last year our organization restructured the site and in May inaugurate the “Centro Europeo per la Cultura Francesca Sorce”, dedicated to a social worker of Mussomeli died in the fulfillment of her duty. The accommodation is very big, new and comfortable and it is provided of all facilities.

The floor plan planned to host volunteers has 2 entrances, one internal and connected with the offices below, one independent. The “House of the Volunteer” is provided with 5 bedrooms, all with window, with a total area of ​​113 square meters, a kitchen of about 32 square meters, 2 areas for toilets and divided by gender for a total of about 38 square meters, a laundry room, a solarium and other common spaces for more than 150 square meters. There is also a secret room where to set many (personal or of common use) things.

RULES CONCERNING THE ACCOMMODATION:

In order to set a good relationship between volunteers in the house and have normal cohabitation conditions, Strauss set some rules all volunteers have to respect. No exception will be considered.

The volunteer Strauss provide board, lodging, care, tutoring, mentorship, language support, medical assistance if needed, days off and holidays. On the contrary, we expect sense of responsibility and
duty.

Volunteers is provided with a room, but this does not mean he is the owner of it. It is just the place where he lives and it belongs to Strauss. No changes are allowed, hang on the walls posters or pictures
ect.

Volunteers have to set their rooms every morning.

There is a weekly turn of cleanings, mandatory for all volunteers, of all the common rooms of the house among the volunteers. With common rooms we mean living room, corridor, kitchen, laundry, secret rooms, toilets and solarium. The cleaning schedule will be introduced and explained to volunteers as soon as soon as they arrive.

There is no possibility to host guests. Although we are very friendly and hospitable people here in Sicily and we understand what it means stay some period of time far from family and friends, we cannot allowed the hosting of other people apart the volunteers.

All volunteers must do a monthly report, after the periodical meetings with the staff. Reports will be about activities, learning process (Youthpass), relationship with staff and other volunteers, accommodation, any other issue considered important by the volunteer.

Volunteers will enjoy days off and holidays, but before leaving the accommodation they have to inform staff about their moving.

LANGUAGE:
Associazione Culturale Strauss will support volunteers for what concerns the use of OLS (Online Linguistic Support) available for participants of European Voluntary Service (EVS). In addition and alongside to language support foreseen under the Program, Strauss organizes also supplementary language courses in order to facilitate the further integration of the volunteers in the organization and in the host communities.

ORGANIZATON DESCRIPTION:

Associazione Culturale Strauss is a nonprofit organization that was born in Mussomeli in 1999. It is a self-financed organization that is part of ARCI (Italian Cultural Recreational Association).

„Arci Strauss” has as main objectives the promotion of a multicultural and multiethnic society, the dissemination of culture and values of the European community in marginal and peripheral areas such as the province of Caltanissetta, and to support for young people.

Main mission of our organization is in fact to meet young people’s needs and provide them services for their social, professional, cultural and personal growing.

The youngsters, target group of “Strauss”, are aged between 15 and 30 years, and many of them are living different disadvantage situation: economic; education; social; geographical, environmental, disability, etc.

The services offered and the activities promoted by Strauss to support the reality of youth extend from the local to the international level.

Specifically, the Strauss manages and works with the following services and activities:

• InfoYOUTH desk;
• Europe desk, that includes the Eurodesk Local Agency;
• “Crea-Impresa” desk;
• “Borsa Lavoro” service for minors charged with crimes of various kind;
• Languages laboratories, art workshops and multimedia laboratories;
• Care, maintenance and beautification of the urban park „Villa Aldisio“;
• European Youth Exchanges and Youth Initiatives in Hosting, Sending and Coordinating;
• Seminars, Training Course, Study Visits in Hosting, Sending and Coordinating;
• European Voluntary Service in Hosting, Sending and Coordinating;
• Cultural entertainment and assistance projects for children in kindergartens and elementary schools;
• Educational projects promoting active citizenship and cultural diversity at middle and high schools;
• Inclusion and integration projects at centers for the disabled and residential communities for minors;
• Projects for tourism promotion and internationalization of the territory;
• Organization of seminars, conferences, caravans antimafia, exhibitions and various events at the local level.
• Orienting women on labour market.

Info-Youth, Europe-desk, info-H and Creaimpresa services register a continuous flow of young people who for one or another reason need support and assistance from our side; which allows us to be always in touch with the reality of youth, understand their needs and try to satisfy them. Through these services, we support the youth community in all directions, helping the user in the preparation of a curriculum vitae, writing a letter of motivation, in preparing for a job interview, in the development of business ideas, in the research of learning experiences and opportunities in Italy or abroad, and, in general, for everything concerning the world of youth.

Promotion activities and environmental awareness carried out at „Villa Aldisio,“ Borsa Lavoro service done in collaboration with the Municipality of Mussomeli and all projects in kindergartens, nursery schools, first and second degree primary schools, in high schools , in centers for people with disabilities and community housing,  allow Strauss to become deeply rooted in the territory and carve out a role of primary importance in civil society, as well as, of course, to promote social and cultural development of young people and the
community as a whole. A further contribution to the strengthening of the role of Strauss in the local community comes from the recent reliance by the municipality of Mussomeli of  the premises of the
Daily Center „Francesca Sorce“, nowadays, after the renovations and adjustments made by Strauss, titled European Centre of Culture „Francesca Sorce.“ It is a building of 2 floors of almost 600 square meters where Strauss has moved offices, conference rooms and accommodation for volunteers.

HOSTING COMMUNITY

The project will be set in the city of Mussomeli. The municipality of Mussomeli, situated in the so called Alta Valle del Platani or Vallone, has a surface of 164 Km2 , a housing density of 69,80 for Km2 and areas destined to public green equal to m2 44.760 including an urban park and small villas lay in the internal and surrounding areas of the town. Seated in the heart of the Sicilian hinterland of the province of Caltanissetta, on over 750 meters on the sea level, Mussomeli, counts a population of about 12.000 inhabitants with  local economy based on agriculture and the breeding. Privileged by a mild climate for the whole year and from a particularly healthy air, in the summer period Mussomeli becomes animated and numerous emigrants return for spending you the vacations; its historical centre of evident medieval origin with  beautiful churches, destination for numerous Sunday tourists coming from the surrounded provinces. The feather in his cap  of the town is the Castle Chiaramontano, that represents for Mussomeli not only  the monument of great interest and appeal, but unequivocally the beginning of its history.    

Mussomeli is located about 50 km from Agrigento and 100 km from Palermo, the two largest cities in the area, a destination for tourists from all over Europe. In general, however, the volunteer will not be difficult to move from Mussomeli to visit during the weekend or days off, an island, Sicily, famous throughout the world for its natural beauty and monuments.

There are many high schools in Mussomeli gathering young people from many smaller surrounding towns. Hospital, pharmacy, counseling offices and child care center make Mussomeli a reference point to the entire population of the Valley.

In Mussomeli traditions are still alive and popular, and this is demonstrated by numerous typical festivals that our town hosts. Famous, for example, is the „Festival of the Castle“ on September 2, a medieval festival attracts many tourists.

In addition, there are several possibilities that Mussomeli offers for leisure time: gymnasiums, swimming pools, soccer pitches, tennis courts and many pubs, clubs and restaurants that make Mussomeli a
destination for many young people of the area.

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

Mussomeli is a small town and actually volunteers do not need to take any mean of transport to reach the activity places or the office of the organization. Accommodation in fact is just in the upper floor of the association place.

Since the city is small, there are no transport service inside the city but only a school bus that pick up the students. Mussomeli is also well connected with the main cities of the area and the island: Palermo, Catania, Caltanissetta and Agrigento.

The bus company ATM Mussomeli connects Mussomeli to Palermo and Agrigento. There are a daily route until Saturday and the bus depart early in the morning. To get back there is a bus in the first afternoon.

The bus company SAIS Trasporti connects Mussomeli to Caltanissetta.

Also for this route there is a daily bus until Saturday and the bus depart early in the morning. To get back there is a bus in the first afternoon.
